This guide explains how to deploy a CloudFormation (CFN) stack to integrate Elastio with AWS Backup Restore Testing, enabling automated inspection of recovery points for zero-day ransomware, insider threats, and malware as part of the restore testing process.
Elastio supports Restore Tests for EC2, EBS, S3, EFS and VMware recovery points.

Deploy the CloudFormation Stack
- Open CloudFormation in the AWS Management Console.
- Click Create Stack with new resources.
Step 1: Specify Template
- Select Amazon S3 URL and paste the provided URL for the CloudFormation template.
- Click Next.
Step 2: Configure Stack Details
- Enter a name for the stack.
- Leave all other settings as default and click Next.
Step 3: Configure Stack Options
- Leave all settings as default and click Next.
Step 4: Review and Submit
- Acknowledge the permissions at the bottom of the screen.
- Click Submit to deploy the stack.
Update AWS Backup Plan with Elastio Tags
To ensure Elastio inspects recovery points as part of restore testing:
- Open AWS Backup in the AWS Management Console.
- Click the Create backup plan button.
Configure Backup Plan
- Define your backup plan settings as needed.
- At the bottom of the Backup Plan creation page, add the following tag in the Tags added to the recovery points (optional) section:
elastio:restore-test=scan
- Click Create Plan.
Automate Recovery Point Protection
Once the backup plan is created, all recovery points generated under this plan will automatically be inspected by Elastio for ransomware detection, insider threat encryption detection and malware scanning.
